Good Hand Hygiene One of the Best Preventatives Against Spread of Germs

In response to the number of confirmed human-to-human transmission of H1N1 flu, the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) raised its alert level to a phase 5.

Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication and implementation of the planned mitigation measure is short. At this stage, effective and essential measures include heightened surveillance, early detection and treatment of cases, and infection control in all health facilities.

Major health organizations, such as the WHO, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Public Health Agency of Canada agree that handwashing and hand sanitizing with an alcohol-based hand rub are especially critical to minimize the spread of germs during times of illness outbreak. The CDC recommends:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
  • Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

GOJO offers comprehensive programs to help you meet the CDC recommendations, including effective soaps and hand sanitizers to help facilities reduce the spread of germs. Additionally, GOJO offers tools to help encourage hand hygiene compliance. Click here to learn more about the Gojo products.
